Tell us about yourself

Daniel is a placement student at present, working in the Engineering department of Hutchinson Engineering whilst studying for a BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has always loved anything to do with Engineering, even from a young age he’s loved taking things apart!

What do you enjoy most about Engineering?

I like creating products that solve a problem, and it’s great to work as part of a team.

What do you like the least?

Writing reports, but it’s the most important part of the job. I prefer to be working with my hands and designing products.

What personal characteristics do you feel are necessary to be a successful engineer?

There are quite a few requirements to be a successful engineer, but what I have found so far is that discipline and dedication are the most important values to have, as are hard work and ambition.

Tell us about your typical day at Hutchinson Engineering in Kilrea

My day can be varied, with working on anything from customer projects to improving the manufacturing build, to undertaking my own projects for internal engineering projects. I also assist with shopfloor inquiries and use CAD with prototyping parts for assembly before they go into production.

You have already completed 8 months of your Engineering placement. What have you learned so far at Hutchinson Engineering?

Well, it has certainly helped me realise that I do want to pursue a career in engineering, and I am thoroughly enjoying everything I am learning at Hutchinson Engineering. I particularly enjoy the design process.

At Hutchinson Engineering we offer a design for Engineering service, and I have been lucky to be able to work as part of the team that offers this service to our customers. It allows me to learn the whole process from concept to completed product, and that is a great opportunity for me to be able to be part of.

What do you enjoy most about the Engineering placement at Hutchinson Engineering?

I enjoy working on my own projects, seeing them through from design to completion. I also enjoy working with the other engineers, working as a team, as I can get to learn a lot from other engineers whilst working on a project with the same issues.

What skills or what lessons have you learned during your Engineering placement at Hutchinson Engineering?

The skills I have learned the most are how to interpret engineering drawings more effectively and more efficiently.

The lessons I have learned as a placement student are always double-checking your dimensions and measurement and working through each project. Once you have double-checked, go back, and check again!

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Hopefully, I will have completed a master’s degree and to be working for a first-class Engineering company such as Hutchinson Engineering.
